This year’s 4-8th grade spelling bee will be held on Friday, January 6th at 2 p.m. at Grace Church in Fayetteville. Generally speaking, students are eligible if they have not yet entered 9th grade, and/or did not reach age 15 by August 31, 2011. (See the full list of eligibility requirements online.) Study tips can be found on the official Scripps website. The winner of this bee may qualify to advance to a regional competition. Please contact Sheri Hampton to register, or with questions. The sign-up deadline is Friday, December 23rd.
The K-3rd spelling bee will be held on January 13th, at 2 p.m. Although students at this level do not go on to another competition, it is excellent experience for those who hope to some day participate in higher grades, as well as a good chance to practice both spelling and public speaking. Please contact Marni Hendrix to register. The deadline to sign up for the K-3rd bee is Friday, Dec. 30th.
There is no charge for NWACHEA members to compete in these bees. For non-members, a $5 participation fee applies.
There was not enough interest to hold the Geography Bee on Friday, December 2nd. There has been discussion of rescheduling for Friday, January 6th, the same day as the 4th-8th grade spelling bee. Both events would be held at Grace Church in Fayetteville. The geography bee would be held at 11 a.m., followed by a break for lunch with the spelling bee starting at 2 p.m.
If your child is interested in participating in the GEOGRAPHY bee at this new date/time, please email Beth Gildner by 8 p.m. Tuesday, November 29th. Once we have seen the response, we will announce whether the Geography Bee has been rescheduled or canceled for the year.
There is no charge for NWACHEA members to compete in the bee. For non-members, a $5 participation fee applies.
Friday, November 18, is the final day to sign up to participate in the Geography Bee.
This year’s bee is scheduled for Friday, December 2, at Grace Church of NWA in Fayetteville, starting at 3 p.m.
Students in grades 4 – 8 are eligible, as long as they did not reach age 15 on or before Sept. 1, 2011. Competitors will answer oral questions in a bee format; the winner will then take a written test to qualify for the state bee. Students with the top 100 scores statewide will be invited to participate in the Arkansas bee. The winner of that bee will go on to represent Arkansas at the national bee in Washington, D.C.
More information about the bee, as well as study helps, can be found at the National Geographic website.
NWACHEA members may register for the bee at no cost. There is a $5 entry fee for non-members. Please contact Beth Gildner to register for the bee.
