2012/13 Geography Bee

NWACHEA is trying to determine the level of interest in a Geography Bee this school year. The bee would be held between December 1 and January 15 (avoiding the time immediately around Christmas and the New Year). Students in grades 4 – 8 are eligible to participate, as long as they have not reached their 15th birthday as of September 1, 2012.

A local bee gives students an opportunity to qualify for state-level competition. The local bee consists of oral questions and answers. The winner takes a written geography test, and the answer sheet is mailed to National Geographic for scoring. The 100 highest-scoring students in each state are notified in early March, and invited to participate in the state bee. State winners go on to compete at the national level.

Families are NOT required to join NWACHEA if a student wishes to participate in the Geography Bee. However, for non-members, there will be an entry fee of $10 per child, due before the bee. NWACHEA members are not required to pay a fee to participate.

National Geographic requires a minimum of six eligible students to hold a bee and there is a substantial, non-refundable registration fee that must be paid in advance by NWACHEA. For that reason, we are asking those parents who are reasonably certain their child will participate, or those who would like more information, to contact Beth Gildner  as soon as possible. When emailing, please include a name and telephone number, and the name, age and grade level of the child(ren) participating in the bee. Please also mention whether your family is a member of NWACHEA. The ABSOLUTE cut-off to sign up will be 8 p.m. on Sunday, September 30th.

Study resources are available online for students who may wish to begin preparing for the bee.
