Save The Date: Scripps Spelling Bee, Nov. 14

PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDAR!  The Scripps spelling bee for older homeschooled students will be held on Friday, November 14, at 1:00 pm in Fayetteville, hosted by NWACHEA.

We typically say it is for 4th to 8th grade, but students younger than 4th grade who are exceptional spellers may participate. (Students just may not be beyond the 8th grade, per national regulations.)

A spelling bee for younger children (K-3rd) will be held in the spring.

Both spelling bees are open to ALL homeschoolers in the area.  NWACHEA membership not a requirement; however, registration is FREE for current members, while there will be a fee for any student whose family does not belong to NWACHEA.

Sign-ups and more details for the older bee will be sent closer to the time.  For more information, contact Marni Hendrix.

REMINDER: Fayetteville NWACHEA Play Day / Planning Meeting THIS FRIDAY

Fayetteville NWACHEA will hold a park play day / planning meeting THIS FRIDAY, August 22nd, from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the city park in Tontitown. We will be discussing plans for the semester and setting a tentative schedule for September – December field trips, parties and other events.  Members who will be participating in fall activities, or homeschoolers who would like to find out more about joining Fayetteville NWACHEA, should plan to attend.

Please bring a picnic lunch for your family, and be sure children are dressed for outside play. The Tontitown weather forecast for Friday is HOT – currently a high of 96° – so please be sure you dress to stay cool and bring plenty of water to keep your kids hydrated! At this point we plan to “soldier on” in spite of the heat and don’t anticipate last-minute adjustments, but ANY changes will be posted online … so out of an abundance of caution, please do try to check before Friday morning.

If you wish to join Fayetteville NWACHEA for the 2014/15 school year, membership applications can be found under the ‘Join’ tab. We will be collecting them at the meeting on August 22nd – if possible, please print the application and fill it out in advance – or they can be mailed to the address on the form.

If you are interested in Fayetteville NWACHEA but would like to meet families in the group and learn more about us before deciding whether to join, you are welcome to attend the play day / planning meeting on Friday. Please be aware, however, that you must become a member to participate in any future activities with the group.

Questions or comments can be directed to Beth Gildner.

REMINDER: Homeschool Help Workshop – August 25

All homeschooling parents are invited to a free Homeschool Help Workshop – Teaching Tips for the Elementary Grades (K-6th) – on Monday, August 25, from 7-9 p.m. at the Circle of Life Hospice Building in Springdale/Tontitown.  Topics will include: teaching each of the subjects, managing the school day, making school efficient and meaningful, and choosing books at the library.

Homeschool Help Workshops are organized by veteran home educators Marni Hendrix and Shelley Kinder. Both Marni and Shelley have many years of experience and have homeschooled children through graduation. These workshops are FREE but donations are accepted to help cover the cost of handouts. The event is not sponsored by a support group, and you do not need to be a member of any group to attend.

Childcare is not provided at the workshop. Nursing infants and babes in arms are welcome.

Directions to Circle of Life hospice:

– From I540 (now called I49), take the 412 / Sunset exit (#72) in Springdale, and drive west toward Tontitown.

– Turn right at the Jones Rd. stoplight (the intersection with the Harps store on the right/north side of 412). Circle of Life is the first building on the right after Harps, 901 Jones Rd. It says Circle of Life on the building, but the sign at the entrance reads Willard and Pat Walker Family Center.
